Secondary Schools

KS3 - 5 (Ages 11 -18)

A typical visit to Bletchley Park will include a guided tour of the grounds, a workshop session of your choosing and scheduled ‘self-guided’ time to explore inside the Mansion, museums, huts and of course our shop. We will also allocate a lunch slot and space for your group as part of your day. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer any storage space for bags or lunches during your visit

At Bletchley Park we offer a variety of facilitated workshops for school groups with specific focus on history, mathematics and computing. Each workshop is 60 minutes in duration and is designed to be engaging, hands-on and challenging for students of all abilities.

Key Stage 3

Codes and ciphers

Students will explore mathematical encryption and encoding techniques that have been used throughout history, tackling complex processes to solve a codebreaking challenge. The workshop includes a unique opportunity to see a genuine Enigma machine and be introduced to its design and role in WW2.

Interception to Intelligence: Land and Sea

In this interactive workshop students will further develop their knowledge and understanding of Britain’s influence and role during WW2. Participating in immersive activities students will be challenged to think strategically and help secure Britain’s success in the Battle of the Atlantic.

Cyber Security

Through interactive games and activities students will examine the lessons learned from Bletchley Park’s Codebreakers and how they relate to being safe in today’s connected world. They will explore the risks associated with having a presence in the online environment and discuss techniques to help keep themselves safe.

Students will also develop an understanding of how these techniques are still relevant in today’s connected world.

Story of Enigma

The iconic Enigma machine is one of the most well-known aspects of the Bletchley Park story, with much of the Codebreakers’ work geared towards unravelling the secrets encrypted by this famous cipher. But what made it such an effective machine? Students will leave this session with a deeper understanding of the Enigma cipher, having learnt about its origins and operation, and used their mathematical skills to calculate the number of setup positions for one of our real, working Enigma machines.

Story of Lorenz

Lorenz, used by Hitler’s High Command for secret messaging, is less well-known than the iconic Enigma machine, but also far more effective. Students will learn some of the secrets of this machine, including its use of binary operations to generate secret codes that dwarfed Enigma in terms of complexity, and prompted the development of the world’s first programmable electronic computer.

They will also have the unique opportunity to see a genuine Enigma machine and will be able to describe its design and role in WW2.
