Outreach Sessions

Outreach Sessions

The following sessions are available for booking by any Outreach visits. Some of these sessions are identical to sessions delivered during on-site visits, so if your students will also be visiting (or have already visited) Bletchley Park please let us know when you get in touch so that we can advise accordingly.

Codes & Ciphers - Workshop

A whistlestop introductory tour of secret messaging throughout history, including the opportunity to do some codebreaking!

Suitable for any room layout. Advisable for normal class-sized groups (this is flexible). Can be adjusted for session lengths of 45 minutes up to 2 hours.

Prerequisite knowledge: None

Includes demonstration of a real, working Enigma machine

Subject relevance: Mathematics, History

Suitable for UK School Key Stages: 2, 3, 4

The Story of Enigma

An introduction to Enigma, the famous encryption system used by Germany throughout World War Two. The session covers some of the misconceptions surrounding the machine; looks into one of its aspects that made it such a secure machine at the time: the sheer number of possible settings (and how to calculate them); and discusses some of the things that made it less secure than it could have been.

Suitable for any room layout. Advisable for normal class-sized groups (this is flexible). Can be adjusted for session lengths of 45 minutes up to 2 hours.

Prerequisite knowledge: Assumes some prior understanding of codes, ciphers, World War Two and Bletchley Park’s role in it.

Includes demonstration of a real, working Enigma machine.

Subject relevance: Mathematics, History

Suitable for UK School Key Stages: 4, 5+

The Story of Lorenz

A parallel to our The Story of Enigma session focussing instead on the less well-known cousin to Enigma, the Lorenz cipher machine, used at higher levels in Germany’s military.

Suitable for any room layout. Advisable for normal class-sized groups (this is flexible). Can be adjusted for session lengths of 45 minutes up to 2 hours.

Prerequisite knowledge: Assumes some understanding of Enigma machines, codes, ciphers, World War Two and Bletchley Park’s role in it.

Subject relevance: Mathematics, Computing, History

Suitable for UK School Key Stages: 4, 5+

Breaking Lorenz

If you already know how Lorenz was used by the German High Command, and how it works to encrypt and decrypt information, this session will delve more deeply into how it was broken, focussing on one key breakthrough. This would be an excellent followup for a group who have already taken part in The Story of Lorenz.

Suitable for any room layout. Advisable for normal class-sized groups (this is flexible). Can be adjusted for session lengths of 45 minutes up to 2 hours.

Prerequisite knowledge: Assumes some understanding of Lorenz machines, binary codes and modulo 2 addition, codes, ciphers, World War Two and Bletchley Park’s role in it.

Subject relevance: Mathematics, Computing, History

Suitable for UK School Key Stages: 4, 5+

Decoding Bletchley Park

An interactive lecture-style presentation for groups interested in the history of Bletchley Park as a codebreaking centre in World War 2.

Suitable for any room layout with any size audience (although if an Enigma demonstration is to be included it is advisable to keep group sizes to around 30 people unless appropriate visualiser equipment can be provided). Best for session lengths of one hour with some flexibility.

Prerequisite knowledge: None

This session can include a hands-on demonstration of a real, working Enigma machine.

Subject relevance: History

Suitable for UK School Key Stages: 3, 4, 5+

Other sessions

  • Assemblies and short presentations can also be arranged as part of your visit.
