Learn how to build a medium wave radio receiver

For British Science Week, the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB) invites young people and their families to join them at the National Radio Centre at Bletchley Park for a fun and hands-on workshop where they can learn more about radio and electronics.

The workshop offers a short introduction to wireless communications, radio propagation and electronic construction, before moving on to the construction of a medium wave radio receiver. This will include using a printed circuit board, selecting components, soldering them in place and testing the circuit.

At the end of the workshop attendees will have a better appreciation of:

  • How wireless communication works
  • How radio receiver selects, demodulates and amplifies

And be able to:

  • Recognise some electronic components; resistors, transistors, capacitors and inductors
  • Make good solder joints
  • Make basic voltage measurements

Attendees will also be able to visit the National Radio Centre to learn more about the history of radio communications and to see a modern amateur radio station in operation.

All tools, test equipment and supervision will be provided by the RSGB. The medium wave receiver kits will be provided free of charge by the Radio Communications Foundation and attendees will be able to take their newly built radio home at the end of the day.

This event is aimed at children aged 10 to 18 (children 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult).

There are two workshop sessions, one in the morning 09:45-12:15 and one in the afternoon 13:00-15:30
