Frequently Asked

Questions

FAQs for the National Intelligence History Conference

The Conference

  • Who is organising the conference?
The inaugural National Intelligence History Conference, taking place 20-22 November 2024, is hosted jointly by Bletchley Park Trust and the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) and will be held at Bletchley Park.
  • Is the conference online or in-person?
This in-person conference will take place at Bletchley Park, a historically significant location and now a vibrant heritage attraction to which you will have access throughout the event. We will not be presenting or broadcasting any elements of the conference online, nor can we accept presentations delivered virtually rather than in-person. (Please note, we initially indicated in the Call for Papers that plenary talks may be broadcast online, but this is now not the case).
  • Why are there so many speakers at the conference?
The format of the National Intelligence History Conference is of an academic conference. The majority of speakers are presenting for 20 minutes as part of a wider panel discussion. Each panel will include an opportunity for a Q&A with the audience. To ensure as many speakers as possible have the opportunity to present their papers, more than one panel session will take place at the same time, each covering different topics within the main conference theme. As more speakers confirm their attendance, the programme will be updated. Please keep checking back at www.bletchleypark.org.uk/nihc
  • Who chose the speakers?
The NIHC Peer Review Panel is comprised of representatives from Bletchley Park Trust and GCHQ, as well as invited UK university academics and subject-matter specialists. The Peer Review Panel considered all submissions and selected proposals based on quality and relevance to the conference theme.

Booking

A Ticket

  • When can I book a ticket?
Tickets are available for purchase between 1 July and 20 October 2024. This cutoff date is to ensure that the conference organisers can confirm numbers and quantities with our suppliers and understand the capacity of spaces for the duration of the event.
  • Can I come to the NIHC?
All those with an interest or background in intelligence history can attend. You can book a ticket even if you are not a speaker or an academic, but please be aware this is an academic conference and the style and format will be characteristic of that type of event rather than more commercial conferences.
  • How do I book a ticket?
    • 1-day or 3-day tickets are available online here (or through Tickets from the homepage).
    • Once you have purchased a ticket, you will receive a confirmation email. This will include a link to a Registration Form where you will be asked to provide further information about your attendance at the conference.
    • The Registration Form provides the organisers with more information about you, and your requirements (each delegate should submit a form). The organisers will confirm your details as on the Registration Form after 20 October 2024. Please complete the form before then.
    • If you have additional requirements not covered on the Registration Form or any other enquiries, you can contact the conference team at [email protected]. Please check the Terms and Conditions when booking as this may help answer your enquiry.
    • If you’ve shared your contact details with us while booking, the organisers may contact you between now and the conference, e.g.: for menu choices, to follow up on accessibility requirements, to check details of your booking. We may also send you updates to let you know we’ve added more information online about the conference.
  • Is the conference dinner included in the ticket price?
Admission tickets to the Conference do not include attendance at the conference dinner. The conference dinner will take place at a nearby restaurant, not at Bletchley Park. Those wishing to attend the conference dinner must purchase a separate ticket. Only those attending the Conference can book a place at the conference dinner. Delegates attending the conference may purchase a ticket to the conference dinner for one additional guest. Please be aware there is limited capacity at the restaurant, so if there is a high demand for tickets, we may contact you about additional guests.
  • Do I need to give you my menu choices for the conference dinner?
Not yet – the menu is there to help you decide if you’d like to attend. You will be contacted after ticket sales close on 20 October 2024 about your menu choices for the conference dinner. Any dietary requirements should be provided in your Conference Registration Form.
  • Can I bring a guest to the conference?
Anyone wishing to attend NIHC should purchase a 1-day or 3-day ticket, and complete a registration form. If you are attending the conference and you would like to bring a guest to the Drinks Reception,  please telephone Bletchley Park’s enquiries team on 01908 272673 to arrange this. Please see above for information on bringing a guest to the conference dinner. Please note there are additional charges to bring a guest to both events.
  • What do I do if I need to cancel?
Please look at our Terms and Conditions which outline the cancellation policy if you, or we, need to make any changes or cancellations.
  • Do I have to print out my tickets to get in?
You will receive a confirmation email when booking, which you will be asked to show on arrival. If you have any questions about your booking or the emails you’re receiving, please contact the conference team at [email protected]
  • Can I attend the drinks reception on the evening of Wednesday 20 November 2024?
The drinks reception, to be held in the Mansion at Bletchley Park, is a great networking opportunity for those attending the conference. If you have a 3-day ticket or a 1-day ticket for Wednesday, the drinks reception is included in your ticket. Additional guests, including those with 1-day tickets for Thursday and Friday, are welcome to attend at a cost of £50 per person. To book to attend the drinks reception, please call 01908 272673.

Accommodation

  • Can I book accommodation for the conference?
All attendees should arrange their own accommodation and travel.  There are many different hotels in and around Milton Keynes, at different price points. You can find information about places to stay through Destination Milton Keynes.

Speaking at NIHC

or displaying a poster

  • I’m a speaker: can I show slides with my talk?
Of course! After you have registered, we will contact you with details of the screen format and resolution requirements for slides, images or multimedia. Every conference space is equipped with a large screen and a laptop is supplied. We ask that speakers submit their slides by email before Monday 18 November to allow us to upload them to our AV system. If you have any questions, please email the conference organisers who have already been in contact with you about your attendance.
  • I’ve been invited to display a poster: do I have to print it myself?
No! We will do that. We ask that you submit your poster to us in PDF format by 20 October 2024 to allow us to print it and follow up with you if necessary.
